"My Legs Hurt"

I would like to share with you the story of a little boy, who I'll refer to as Mike.  Mike's mother brought him in to the office because she didn't know what else to do.  Mike has had Asperger's Syndrome, an Autism Spectrum Disorder, since he was three years old.  When his mother brought him in at age 11, Mike was on 5 different medications to control his behavior and mood.  He had a personal teaching assistant in school, and had to be removed from class frequently for outbursts, and daily to take a nap.

I took a thorough history and performed an in depth physical examination of Mike.  During the examination, I found myself saddened by the empty shell of a little boy Mike was.  He was very quiet.  Nothing seemed to get him excited.

We started Mike on a regular schedule of chiropractic care, seeing him several times a week for the initial phase of care.  Each time Mike's mother would bring him to the office, I would ask about any changes that were noticed in his behavior.  The first couple of weeks, there were no major changes.  We continued seeing Mike and correcting his subluxations.

About three weeks into his care, Mike came in for his regular visit complaining that his legs hurt.  I was a bit surprised because Mike usually didn't say much of anything during his visits.  I examined his legs and performed some orthopedic tests on his hips, knees, and ankles, but couldn't find anything wrong.  I adjusted his spine, said we would continue to monitor his leg pain, and sent him home.

Two days later, Mike's mother brought him in for his next visit.  She told me she had a conversation with Mike's teacher's aid, and may have figured out why Mike's legs were hurting.  Mike was actually participating in gym class, and playing at recess...for the first time!  He had sore muscles!

As Mike continued under care, I saw wonderful changes in his behavior.  When he would come into the office, I could see a spark in his eyes replace the hollowness that was once there.  His teacher's aid also reported that he no longer needed naps during the school day, and that his outbursts had decreased dramatically.  She was afraid she was going to lose her job due to how well he was doing!

Unfortunately, my time came to leave that clinic, and to move on, but Mike continues under regular chiropractic care, and continues to live a better quality of life!

Never underestimate the power of a chiropractic adjustment!
